VISUAL PREACHING
Keep Your Purpose in Mind
Several years ago, a Michigan State University study on using visual media in Christian worship revealed that outreach was often a key goal for implementing visual media technology. According to author Steven J. Koster, “Contemporary relevance and evangelical outreach are the main goals for choosing integration, echoing wider movements of contemporary worship and church growth.” The study also showed that the third key goal was “outreach to youth.”
Of course, living in a society saturated with high-quality visual media, most leaders recognize that to succeed the images used in church must also be high caliber design. But according to another recent study, when viewing visual graphics “the impression of image quality differs between the young people and old people.” Yes, that’s right, the youth have different tastes than older generations.
So when you make your decision about using visual media for preaching, keep in mind your purpose and audience. If you truly want to reach a younger group, get feedback from the youth in your church about how they like your slides. Sometimes a Bible painting might be appropriate; other times an edgy, contemporary illustration is the best fit. Just keep the end in mind, and evaluate regularly how you’re doing.
Here at SermonView, we’re committed to offering a variety of high-quality imagery, in a range of styles suitable for church. Whatever your goals, we’re confident you’ll find graphics that will fit your purpose and your audience. For us, the bottom line is serving you, as you let God work through you to reach out to your community. Because in the end, that’s what it’s all about.
